Most people do not seem to realise that Internet scams are a very well-organised billion-dollar enterprises.

Those stupid-sounding emails promising to transfer millions of dollars into a person's bank account may raise a chuckle, but there are countless fools who are sucked into the most ludicrous sounding scams and most are too embarrassed to even report them to authorities.

The Australian, whose identity was not revealed, said he often chatted online with “Matheson” until she became his girlfriend.

He said the suspect had convinced him to send money to the Philippines because the suspect claimed there is no one to support her financially as both her parents are dead.

I nominate a password and when I’ve seen the goods I tell her brother in law what it is (or email her with it). I even chatted to my husband about it and we agreed that Western Union sounded like they had a good system in place. They have posts about consumer protection and how you should never send money to someone who you don’t know in real life.

I very nearly went ahead with this, until I had a moment to stop and think about it. But despite all these warnings for consumers, they haven’t actually prevented this from reoccurring. And with that in mind, they may not even need the code.

So, if I wire this money to a person I don’t know with only a password between them receiving the money or not, what is to stop them bribing or whining their way to getting the clerk to hand it over? If Western Union didn’t have a password system in place, it wouldn’t trick otherwise savvy people from thinking this was a legitimate escrow system that they could trust. And why did the details look like a cut-and-paste job? The final red flag was when the supposed brother-in-law started asking for the transaction number of the payment before he arrived. But when I thought about it, once he had that transaction code, the only thing stopping them from having my money was a clerk I don’t know in a country I don’t know, who may or may not bother asking for a password. I’m sure a friendly clerk could look the transaction up for them.

When the dating scam occurs through a dating site, make sure to report it through their website. Victims should also check out the FBI's website dedicated to online fraud called Looks Too Good To Be True, which offers scam reporting for citizens of any country, regardless of their location.

And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off. He said it must of been an error and he would clear it up. His English was very good when texting and no accent when talking on phone. But I wanted to know if they sent you pictures of the girls party like they did my mom? I had fun and even led him by saying "gosh, I feel SO bad for your motherless child and wish I could do ANYTHING for you but I need to go for now." When he said he'd msg me another time, I said "no, you wont.t I I knew you were not Gen John and just messing around for my amusement. just two days ago he tomb me her had received an email from Stanley's teacher telling him he was very sick and needed medical attention and he couldn't leave the ship of course so he needed to borrow money and not to worry he would pay me back as soon as he got off that ship I think he said he had 5 wks left.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. I trusted him and awaited for him to get the bank straightened out. They sure do make everything seem believable and I just want to protect my mom. Good luck with whatever your God does to you." Now just looking for how to report him! Ha I asked for the name of the school -no response then he told me he would send me his phone # that never happened,we were chatting on messenger so if he was in Dubai his time would be different then mine of course he didn't know maybe it's in the settings same BS I asked huge much it is that he needed the amount was 25.00 I simply said I'm sorry I don't work I can't help you out wish I could by the way the name was Ken Ovoke sharp looking man if indeed it was him.

Don't answer their phone calls, block all of their emails (or send them to a folder reserved for future litigation purposes), and don't reply to their instant messages whether in a chat program, on your cell phone or at a dating site.

Make hard copies of everything the dating scammer gave or sent to you, and keep them in a file or binder for safe keeping.

If there was no password system, I wouldn’t have even been tempted by this scam. I had no real-life address or phone number for the police to check up on easily. Hey, let’s stop and do a search for “Western Union Scam Benin”.

Also, Western Union should give warnings to users as they make the transaction. Oh look, there are dozens of similar scam stories, with people specifically mentioning “Coutenou”, which is a city I was given in the payment details.

A romance scam, dating scam or catfishing is a swindle where someone tries to lure another into giving them money through a dating site, email romance, or otherwise dating-related contact.
